The Christmas tree as a symbol of Christmas – where does this custom come from?

Christmas tree in the office

The Christmas tree as a symbol of Christmas has its roots in Europe and is often associated with German tradition. There are several theories about the origins of this custom, but one of the most popular tells that the Christmas tree as a Christmas decoration appeared in medieval German towns.

German tradition…

The first references to decorated Christmas trees date back to the 14th century. It is assumed that the custom started with decorating coniferous trees in a festive manner. At Christmas time in Germany, people decorated coniferous trees with twigs, apples, nuts and other ornaments. In the 16th century, candles also began to be added to symbolise the stars in the sky.

…which has come to the United States

The tradition was popularised over time by German immigrants in the United States in the 19th century, especially after the publication of an illustrated book entitled. ‘The Christmas Tree’ (1848) by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This book described how it was German immigrants in America who celebrated Christmas, including decorating the Christmas tree.

The most important Christmas symbol

Since then, the custom of decorating a Christmas tree has become popular all over the world and is one of the most recognisable symbols of Christmas. Choosing, decorating and displaying a Christmas tree at home has become an integral part of the festive celebrations and the tree itself symbolises hope, joy and family unity at this special time of year.
